Ibogaine is purified from the roots of a flowering African shrub known as Tabernantheiboga. Indigenous African tribes have used the root bark of this shrub for thousands of years, mainly in ceremonies, hunting expeditions, and shamanistic rituals. The French later discovered the purified form of Ibogaine hydrochloride in the late 1800’s. During this period, Ibogaine was mostly used in very low doses as a remedy for fatigue and depression. Ibogaine was not discovered as a method for treating chemical dependency until 1962.
Howard Lotsof, a 19-year-old heroin addict from New Jersey, had no intention of getting clean prior to his Ibogaine experience. In an attempt to experience a new high, young Lotsof decided to try this unfamiliar drug called Ibogaine. Lotsof had no Idea that Ibogaine was going to completely change the way he felt about heroin.
“Thirty-three hours later I was no longer a heroin addict,” recalled Lotsof. Lotsof was so shocked by the results he decided to test the Ibogaine on his fellow heroin addict friends. Five heroin addicts agreed to try a single Ibogaine dose; sure enough all five of them showed similar results, reporting a dramatic reduction in withdrawal symptoms and craving.
Lotsof didn’t jump on his discovery of Ibogaine right away because, “What does a 19 year-old kid know about anything” (Howard Lotsof). However in the 1980s Lotsof patented Ibogaine treatments for a variety of addictions. Once Lotsof was completely convinced this was the real thing, he set out to introduce the Ibogaine Drug to major pharmaceutical companies.
Since then, Lotsof, as well as many other people and organizations, haven’t been able to sell American drug companies on Ibogaine. The literature and reports following Ibogaine explain the disinterest pharmaceutical companies have are mainly due to a lack of potential profit. Because there is no synthetic version of Ibogaine and because it is only taken once, the profitability is greatly reduced.
Unfortunately Ibogaine is not yet legal in the United States however, Ibogaine is safely administered at Transitions Rosarito Beach.
